How to Backup and Restore a Joomla Website

It is very important to back up your website so it can be restore fast and easy in case the data is lost by accident, this is particularly important in the beginning when building the website because it is then when you are most vulnerable since you are experimenting with extensions installing and uninstalling plug-ins components and modules, any of these can cause a conflict and bring your site down, you could fix the website by finding and repairing the conflict but that could cost you valuable time which you should be using building the website.
 
One of the most used free applications for backing up Joomla is Akeeba Backup
Akeeba Backup makes a clone of the site's database and files in to a .jpa file.

Akeeba Backup uses a php executable file called Kickstart.php to automate the steps required before and after the restoration of a site backed up with Akeeba Backup.

Kickstart.php is used to extract the akeeba backup archive files directly on the target server and even CMS and script installation files such as Joomla, WordPress, Drupal, phpBB

Akeeba is one of the most effective tools for backing up, transfer and restore a Joomla Site from your localhost to your hosting account or from your hosting account to your localhost.

If you have built your site on your localhost, you will need to transfer it to your hosting account.

TRANSFERRING JOOMLA FROM YOUR HOSTING ACCOUNT TO YOUR COMPUTER LOCALHOST:

We are going to assume that you have your domain name and ftp folder already setup.

1. Download Akeeba Backup
2. Download Akeeba Kickstart Core
3. Install Akeeba Backup on your Joomla site
4. Configure Akeeba Backup on you Server
5. Back up your site
6. Akeeba Backup creates the file on the following path Site/administrator/component/com_akeeba/backup
7. Upload the file to your site's ftp
8. Create a Database on your MySQL
9. Copy the .jpa and kickstart.php files into the site's ftp folder
10. Open your browser and type yoursitesname.com/kickstart.php
11. Follow the instructions
12. Input your host name, database name and password.
13. Remove the installation folder
14. Clean up the installation

This completes the restoration process


TRANSFERRING JOOMLA FROM YOUR COMPUTER LOCALHOST TO YOUR HOSTING ACCOUNT
:

1. Download Akeeba Backup
2. Download Akeeba Kickstart Core
3. Install Akeeba Backup on your Joomla site
4. Configure Akeeba Backup on you Server
5. Back up your site
6. Akeeba Backup creates the file on the following path Site/administrator/component/com_akeeba/backup
7. Download the file to your computer
8. Create a Database on your phpMyAdmin
9. Create a folder on your Site's folder
10. Name it the name of the site
11. Copy the .jpa and kickstart.php files into the folder
12. Open your browser and type localhost/yoursitesname/kickstart.php
13. Follow the instructions
14. Input your host name, database name and password.
15. Remove the installation folder
16. Clean up the installation

This completes the restoration process
